38th: Van der Sar, Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra (5/5)

Conclusions
- United played their first choice defence in 4 out of 38 games this season (11%)
- United played just 1 of their first choice defence in 6 out of 38 games this season (16%)
- United didn’t have their first choice defence all fully fit until 30 games in to the season, March 14th.
- Cech played in over 1/3 more games than Van der Sar
- Chelsea’s first choice central defenders played an average of 77% of all games this season. United’s first choice central defenders played an average of 49% of all games.

If Chelsea can only finish one point above us this season (not taking in to consideration the match defining decisions that went in their way against Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge this season) when we’ve suffered so many injuries, we certainly should be hopeful for what a fitter United will achieve next season.

Roll on 2010-2011!

The stats are basically flawed. You can't expect Van Der Sar to stay fit when he is 40 years of age. To have him as first choice, you need to keep in mind he might take longer to recover.

Counting Hargreaves makes no sense. We knew he wasn't going to play any part this season since his surgeries. So if we knew that, we needed to get some cover for him if we include him in this list.

Rio was quite injury prone since last season and living in hope of him being fit doesn't make much sense.

Brown has always been injury prone. Nothing new in that.

Vidic's injury early on was pretty crucial though as it took him a lot of time to settle in again. And O'shea has been so reliable and versatile, we missed him massively. We were unlucky there as in it was his first major injury layoff.

I tend to agree though that having 6 out of 7 first team defenders is a really huge crises for any team even with out squad quality. It basically cost us three points to Fulham. So yes, it played a part but it is pretty much overstated. We still conceded less goals home and away than Chelsea which tells me somewhere along the line our attacking players couldn't do their job that well.
