PostSubject: Rooney's Ankle injury   Wed Mar 31, 2010 12:22 pm

Sir Alex Ferguson admits Wayne Rooney is a doubt for Saturday's meeting with Chelsea after limping off in midweek.

The Manchester United frontman hobbled off towards the end of the Red Devils' 2-1 defeat away at Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

The England ace, who had been on target in the game at the Allianz Arena, went over on his right ankle in the dying seconds of the first leg clash.

He looked to be in some pain as he left the field, with fears immediately raised as to his continued involvement for United this season and at this summer's World Cup.

It is too early to say how badly the in-form striker has been hurt, but Ferguson accepts that he may be unavailable for a mammoth top of the table clash with Chelsea at Old Trafford this weekend.

"He has got a kick to the ankle, we will just have to wait and see tomorrow (Wednesday)," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

"Hopefully it's not too serious. He may be doubtful for Saturday but we don't know, it's too early to say."

Rooney could also be a doubt for the return date with Bayern next Wednesday, as United look to overturn their first leg deficit.
No complaints

They edged ahead early on in Munich, but saw Franck Ribery and Ivica Olic and peg them back.

Ferguson admitted afterwards that United were a long way from their best, but believes their away goal could prove crucial in a tie which is far from over.

"We didn't play well enough to be honest, we kept giving the ball away. We caused our own defeat," he said.

"Bayern were the better team, we can't complain about that, but we're better than that in possession. We kept giving it away and that was our downfall.

"The first goal was a bit of luck with a deflection but the last goal, I don't know how you describe it. The game was done and we gave a terrible goal away."

He added: "Old Trafford will be a different game, obviously.

"We will be much better, no doubt about that, and hopefully we can recover.

"We have the away goal and we'll go out to win the game."

He was seen with this after the match:

Doesn't look good. Hopefully it's nothing much and he can play the return leg or atleast be back in a week or two.

The cast on his foot might just be a precautionary step.

In the end, I saw why he limped, he just twisted his ankle by standing at an odd angle on his right foot outwards. It can be a minor "bruising" with swelling, and it can also be damn serious if he has twinged some internal part. I m hoping for the former.

The match in itself was horrifying. If Bayern can dismantle our midfield that easily, then I believe we have got a hell of a problem even in the return leg.

Yeah. I know it's precautionary. Yup it's a twist and I hope it's not too major. But looking at his reaction when he twisted it, it doesn't look good. For a minute I thought fuck there goes a metatarsal. Hopefully it's minor. We'll get to know today.

Time for Berbatov to step up. About time.

And yeah Bommel and Pranjic controlled the midfield and our passing was gash. Carrick being a spastic at times unaware of what happening, Scholes not at his best, Park running around uselessly and Evra being below par.

I'm still confident we'll run them down at Old Trafford.

The only positive this result has is it'll silence the muppets who thought we were already in the final when the draw was made.

United had a tentativeness about their game, the goal doesnt count, it was Soooo early. And thank fuck for the early goal, otherwise it would have been near impossible to get an away goal, the way the game panned out.

Our midfield didnt work because their was no one to pass to at times. Players had to go for tough passes, and with Bayern hustling the likes of carrick and scholes, it was inevitable that we would lose possession.

Another thing that has kinda bothered me for a bit now is that, Valencia has been anonymous in the last few games he has played.

Valencia didn't have enough time to make an impact. Ditto Berbatov. And we did have our chances in the first half. Rooney should have score from Fletcher's cross.

The problem was we played very deep. So when we got the ball on Bayern's attack, the midfield had nowhere to pass too and their CMs just hassled us. Players making gash passes and giving away the ball cheaply didn't help.

Also that Vidic header from Giggs' corner could have very easily gone in.

Fuck...only one away goal.
United are used to scoring on away games.....thats why this 2-1 looks weird.
We'll beat them at OT.

Rooney should be back by the 2nd leg Im hoping.
Berba to play against chelsea alone :|

What only one away goal? One goal is a good return away from home. We don't always score lots of away goals, mostly knick the games. In anycase we've seldom scored more than one away goal in the knockouts over the last few years. I can only remember Milan and Arsenal where we've scored more than two goals in the group stages.

Still.
Another away goal would have given us a better advantage.
Anyways one is better than nothing.

We should score one at old trafford in the opening minutes,
cause later if bayern start cracking and our midfield goes low, then there is a chance they might bang one or two in

Rooney facing four weeks out

Wayne Rooney is facing between two and four weeks on the sidelines with a sprained ankle, Sky Sports News understands.

The Manchester United and England talisman had the nation holding their breath as he crumpled in a heap on the turf at the Allianz Arena in the closing seconds of the 2-1 UEFA Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich.

Rooney, who had bagged his 34th goal of an astonishing season with just 64 seconds on the clock in the quarter-final first leg meeting, had to be helped from the field and later left the stadium on crutches.

Replays of the incident showed he had turned his right ankle when he landed awkwardly, causing immediate concern for Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson and England counterpart Fabio Capello.

The fears of the national team appear to be have been alleviated by the initial prognosis, but the Red Devils will be without their attacking ace for a significant spell during the title run-in.

Ferguson's men, who head the Premier League by one point from Chelsea, play host to their title rivals at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime in what could well prove to be a pivotal moment in the season.

The return leg of their European showdown with Bayern follows next Wednesday when United know they must score if they are to progress to the semi-finals of the competition.

Rooney can expect to miss the trip to Blackburn on 11th April and may also struggle to be involved in the Manchester derby with City at Eastlands the following weekend and the home meeting with Spurs on 24th April.

That would leave the 24-year-old with just the Premier League encounters against Sunderland and Stoke to regain match sharpness in domestic action before attention turns to England's World Cup bid in South Africa.

Son of a bitch we are in trouble.
Rooney likely to be out till 2-3-4 weeks.
So he'll miss chelsea, bayern, blackburn and most probably city.
wrong time to get injured.
all pressure on berbatov now.
if he doesnt step up then kiss one title goodbye

2 weeks to 4 weeks it says, doesn't it?

It's pretty much confirmed he won't return for the Blackburn game. Hopefully against Shitty.

Nice insight this. Don't know the source though.

Quote :

It's tempting to see Wayne Rooney's injury as the pivotal moment in Manchester United's season - after all, how could they possibly hope to beat Chelsea and Bayern Munich without the media-appointed Best Player In The World? What hope do they have of glory when the only player available to take his place is the fifth-best striker in English football?

Give most managers the choice of lone striker from the whole pool of Premier League strikers for a series of massive games and I'll wager that only Rooney, Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba and possibly Carlos Tevez would be taken in the draft ahead of Berbatov. Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe would be discarded as way out of their depth and Emmanuel Adebayor and Nicolas Anelka are woefully out of form.

Contrast that with Berbatov, a player who has scored five goals in his last six league starts and a very credible 12 goals in his 19 starts all season. He's been far more prolific than current media favourites Bobby Zamora and John Carew, while his first touch puts everyone barring Lionel Messi but including Rooney to shame. And yet we're supposed to believe United's chances are massively deteriorated by his presence?

It suits the English media to paint Rooney as the best player in the world, while the suspiciously foreign-looking and languid Berbatov is an easy target with his massive price tag and his surly face. Fans are happy to join in with the booing of the pantomime villain, whose only real crime is to not sweat quite as much as we think he should while being really very good at football.

They say he doesn't deliver in big games, while ignoring the fact that Sir Alex Ferguson never actually picks him for those big games because his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation leaves no room for two strikers. This season he has played less than 90 minutes in total in five games against Big Four sides, succinctly explaining why he never seems to deliver in those big games.

It would be foolish to suggest that anyone barring Berbatov would pick Berbatov over Rooney for games against Chelsea and Bayern, but United have a back-up far better than any other Premier League side. Forget the £30m price tag - it won't be the price tag holding up the ball, bringing the midfield into play, somehow easing itself out of tight spaces and winning balls in the air, it will be a footballer who just happens to be very good indeed.

Wolves and Bolton are hardly the hardiest of opposition but they were both beaten by United teams featuring Berbatov as a lone striker, while the Bulgarian was impressive against Inter last season in a rare outing without Rooney in a very combative game that ended 0-0. He may not offer quite the same goal threat as Rooney, but you can bet your bottom dollar he will lose the ball with less frequency.

If I were a United fan, I would not be worrying about going into Saturday's match against Chelsea having been forced into fielding one of the best footballers in Europe as the lone striker. I'd be too busy worrying about the composition of a midfield that looked almost as lost against Munich as Barcelona.
