In an admission that is set to shock England coach Fabio Capello, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that the playing future for Rio Ferdinand is in limbo as the defender fails to shrug off an ongoing back injury.

The 31-year-old Three Lions stalwart has been unavailable for the Red Devils since their 2-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield two months ago, and there is now talk that another injection might be his last hope of salvaging his season, and hopefully, his career.

Ferdinand has been undertaking a rigorous fitness regime to overcome his back problems for over a year now.

Speaking to the press, he said: "He gets his core work done in the gymnasium, we gave him an injection just over two weeks ago so we had to let that settle for a week."

"He did nothing for a week and then got back into the gym work and we're hoping that that pain goes away."

Ferguson believes it's difficult to pinpoint the progress of the central defender, as his type of injury is a troubling one to get the better of.

Adding: "It's difficult to put a time line on it. Anyone who's got a back injury or a sore back knows what I'm talking about. It is a difficult thing. He's not showing that it's troubling him mentally."

"He's quite a composed lad, Rio, and quite a laid-back lad. But inwardly he'll be feeling [worry] - there's no doubt about that - because he's a footballer and footballers like to play. He'll be thinking about all sorts; the run-in to the league and important games coming up because he's missing out on that," he said.

-------------------------------------------

So it suggests there is no definite date of his return. This is upsetting.
