Sir Alex Ferguson: I’ll outlast 20 Manchester City managers

Sir Alex Ferguson: I'll outlast 20 Manchester City managers | Premier League - Times Online

Sir Alex Ferguson has turned up the heat on Roberto Mancini by saying
that he believes he will be in charge at Old Trafford by the time
Manchester City have gone through a further six managers.

The Manchester United manager has condemned as “unacceptable” City’s
treatment of Mark Hughes, who was sacked last Saturday after only 18
months in charge, but he sees no end to the club’s revolving-door
policy.

Mancini became the fourteenth permanent manager to be appointed by City
during Ferguson’s 23-year tenure at United and the Scot, who turns 68
on Thursday, mischievously suggested that he expects to be around by
the time that number hits 20, even though he has hinted that he will
retire before his 70th birthday.

“Fourteenth? Is that all?” Ferguson said when the subject of Mancini
and his predecessors as City manager was raised. “I can’t wait for the
twentieth.”

Mancini reiterated his belief before his first game in charge of City,
at home to Stoke City this afternoon, that the club will finish fourth
this season and win the Barclays Premier League next term, but Ferguson
suggested that his rival’s desire to “upstage” United stems from an
inferiority complex. “It’s a difficult job being in a city with
Manchester United and the success they’ve had over the years and,
therefore, there is always a moment where they think they can upstage
us or something and I think them getting Carlos Tévez was one of those
moments,” said Ferguson, whose team play Hull City at the KC Stadium
tomorrow.

“They felt they’d upstaged us because they had stolen one of our
players from us. He’s not the only player who’s gone from United to
Manchester City over the years, there are plenty of players.”

Ferguson, who believes that the appointment of Mancini is a “gamble”,
given that the former Inter Milan coach has no experience of managing
in the Premier League, also castigated City’s owners for humiliating
Hughes by allowing him to take charge against Sunderland knowing that
he was going to be formally sacked after the game.

“It’s the one thing I don’t need to discuss because it’s so obvious
that that kind of behaviour is unacceptable,” Ferguson said. “It
doesn’t matter if you’ve lost 20 games or two games, as was the case
with Mark. There’s a way to treat people, surely.

“But Christmas time seems to bring out the worst in directors and
chairmen. I don’t know how they could have done it. For Mark, having to
go through the game, knowing that was going to happen at the end of it
must have been terrible.

“I have said it time and time again, there is good evidence that
staying with a manager [is the right thing to do]. The way United stood
by me at the time when I first came. Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest
is also a good example and Arsène Wenger at Arsenal. Changing a manager
doesn’t necessarily mean you are going to be successful.”

Ferguson praised Steve Bruce, the Sunderland manager, for showing the
loyalty to Hughes that City did not show to his former United team-mate.

“In football, you have disputes with fellow managers from time to time
or whatever, but what Brucie did was defend an old team-mate,” Ferguson
said. “Steve and Mark were part of that great team of ours of ’94,
where they stood by each other. Their loyalty was fantastic. They would
fight the Devil, that team. And I think that’s what Steve did. I was
really proud of Steve for doing that.”

Ferguson has told his players to raise their game against Hull tomorrow
after the 3-0 defeat by Fulham last weekend, but the manager expects to
have to field a makeshift back four again, with Nemanja Vidic, Wes
Brown and Jonny Evans struggling with injury.

Rafael and Fábio Da Silva are available, but Ferguson gave
contradictory messages over the fitness of Rio Ferdinand, saying that
“there’s no light there” before adding that the defender was “not too
far away” from a return from a back injury.

Brilliant man is our Fergie! Is full of passion, determination and class! I don't know after winning so much, how he keeps himself so determined and focused. That statement clearly suggests he is enjoying every minute of his job and will continue for a long long time.

We are truly blessed to have a man like Sir Alex managing United.

Hope he continues for man man years.

As for City......33 years!!

I'm really hoping one of the managers goes on a rant against him like Benitez last season. That made the season more lively and made the joy worth much more when we won the 18 biggrin

As for City......I'd rather shag a bucket with a big hole in it than be a City fan

Mancini should fight back.
Otherwise it'll be boring again
Mancini: ''I'll win five titles, four cups! "
